ABOUT

Anne Pullar has had a camera in her hand for much of her life. Her relationship with photography began early and deepened during extensive travel in her twenties, where the act of observing, recording, and interpreting the world became an enduring practice. This foundation was further strengthened during her time working at New Zealand Photocorp in the 1980s, one of the country’s key photographic companies, where technical understanding and professional discipline complemented her growing creative instinct.

Today, Anne is based in Central Otago, a region that profoundly shapes her work. She is drawn to its expansive landscapes, shifting light, and the quiet power of land that carries both presence and memory. Her photography is motivated not simply by scale, but by essence, the interplay of light and shadow, surface and texture, stillness and movement.

For Anne, photography is a way of seeing, not just looking. She is attentive to detail and nuance, often noticing subtle elements within the landscape that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Whether working with landforms, wildlife, or place-based narratives, her images explore the stories held within environments and the fragile balance shared between people, creatures, and the natural world.

Solitude plays an important role in her practice. Anne values time spent immersed in place, breathing the air, absorbing the light, and allowing an environment to reveal itself slowly. Her process balances intuition with intention, blending considered planning with responsiveness to the moment. This approach allows her work to remain open, fluid, and emotionally resonant.
At its core, Anne’s photography invites curiosity. She hopes her images draw viewers into a space or place, encouraging contemplation and a deeper connection with the world around them. Through her work, she seeks to showcase the environments, people, and creatures we share this world with, offering a perspective shaped by respect, attentiveness, and a genuine sense of wonder.

In 2021, Anne completed a Diploma in Photography at the Southern Institute of Technology, formalising a practice that continues to evolve through both lived experience and creative exploration.
